A new fact-sheet will help people in the Tweed, Byron and Northern Rivers areas better understand and protect Glossy Black-Cockatoos.
The 4-page fact sheet jointly developed by Tweed Shire Council, Byron Shire Council, Brunswick Valley Landcare, Glossy Black Conservancy and Conservation Volunteers Australia explores how to identify Glossies but it goes one step further. The fact sheet includes a wealth of information about the trees Glossy Black-Cockatoos rely on for feeding and how to go about preparing for a habitat planting.
As well as a useful species list, the fact sheet also includes a potential habitat map for the whole of north-eastern NSW.
The fact sheet is a critical resource for people in the Tweed and Byron Shires wanting to take action to protect the vulnerable South-Eastern Glossy Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami), whose population is declining due to habitat loss, bushfires, and climate change.
Landholders, citizen scientists, and environmental contractors will benefit from the resource, which is available for download here.
